St. Michael’s Half Training 5/4-5/10 – Week 7

May 11, 2015

Happy Monday, hope everyone had a good weekend enjoying the weather and celebrating Mother’s Day.  Luckily my parents are local, so I never travel too far to see them.  Today I am linking up with Tara at Running n’ Reading for her Weekend Update.

Monday 5/4– 2 mile walk

Tuesday 5/5 – 2 mile walk

Wednesday 5/6 – 2 mile walk  + 60 minutes yoga + 60 minutes personal training

Thursday 5/7 – 1 mile walk

Friday 5/8 – 2 mile walk

Saturday 5/9 –  5 miles + 3 miles (intervals, strength)

Sunday 5/10 – Mother’s Day 4 Miler

Total: 21 miles

In typical Monday fashion, I had to cancel my planned runs/workouts, but luckily the week ended better than it started and I finished with 21 miles and over 100,000 steps.  On Wednesday I went to CorePower Yoga with Rachel – it was sweaty and fabulous! My left calf had been bothering me (very tight) the past couple of days and it definitely helped loosen it up.

On Wednesday I met some of the Oiselle girls at Pacifico Cantina to celebrate Julie’s birthday! It is always fun catching up with everyone.

Unfortunately I missed the run portion of the evening, but I was able to enjoy a yummy watermelon margarita (a first) and tacos (the baja taco was gooodd).

The fitness highlight of the week came on Saturday.  I met Rachel on the Mount Vernon Trail for a 5 miler.  It was nice to change up our route and I may be using this trail more often for marathon training (although I may start out in Dangerfield for the longer runs because there is more shade further south of the trail).  I did not have my Garmin on, but I think we had a faster second half.

Following the 5 miler (and a carton of watermelon) I met my trainer for a run session for another 3 miles where we did some sprint and strength work.   I was exhausted, but I knew I would have plenty of R&R that afternoon.  Rachel and I (since you know… we haven’t seen each other in forever…joke joke) made an appointment to use our Gilt City deal at Varnish Lane.

For those of you in the DC/MD/VA area, Varnish Lane is a nail salon in Friendship Heights that provides waterless manicures and pedicures (they soften the skin with lotions and towels).

It was beautiful inside, relaxing, and the customer service was excellent. I will definitely make another appointment here in the future.

Of course, another social/fitness highlight of the week was celebrating Mother’s Day with the family.  On Sunday, I met my mom in Reston, Virginia for the Mother’s Day 4 Miler where we battled the two H’s – hills and humidity (recap to come this week + my Bethesda 8K recap).  Later that evening I also had dinner with my parents and brother – it was a fun night.  On a random note – yay to Cliff for finishing his first year of grad school!

How was your weekend?

Have you ever gotten a waterless manicure/pedicure? Fish pedicure?

It was a nice weekend! I’ve never gotten a fish pedicure, not sure I want to…I am a bit squirmish!

    1. A lot of my friends ran the Mother’s Day 4-Miler. I’m glad you and your mom had fun, despite the heat and humidity!

I love the idea of a waterless pedicure! My skin is very dry, and all that lotion sounds wonderful.

It was nice, it was my first time visiting the Brown Chapel Park area. The waterless pedicure was a pleasant experience – hopefully it will last a long time.

    1. What a fun weekend! Congrats to you and your mom for completing the Mother’s Day 4-miler – it was indeed very humid! I struggled through a hilly 3-miler in my neighborhood. I’m glad your calf is feeling better! And congrats to Cliff on finishing his year of grad school! Awesome!

Thanks! I’ll pass the message to him. I always forget how early the humidity descends upon DC. Summer training will be so fun….oophh..

I’ve never gotten a fish one – too scared! I suppose never say never though.. I may just have to close my eyes 🙂 Glad you were able to see your family in PA this past weekend!

    1. Those tacos look amazing! Glad to hear your calf is loosening up. I hate it when my achilles/calves tighten up. I have gotten a fish pedicure once – at the Singapore Zoo. I giggled the whole time because it tickled!

So neat you’ve gotten a fish pedicure before – I am a bit scared, but I bet I would be ticklish. Usually my calves are tight only after the first few miles or so, but lately it has been everyday. Will need to do some more research.

    1. what a fun way to spend mother’s day! the weekend here was really cold; i wasn’t expecting it at all! i’m looking forward to nicer weather and consistent weather. congratulations to cliff!

Congrats to you too! Ahhh cool Chicago sounds nice – seems like you get both extremes very cold and very hot. Nice you get to enjoy the inbetween state for a little bit.

    1. Yay, congrats Cliff!

Those tacos look amazing! When I was younger I didn’t really like mexican food, but over the last year or so it’s become my favorite. If there’s a taco on the menu I’m eating it! 🙂

Thanks Kristina! Will pass the message to him. Me too, as I’ve gotten older, I crave Mexican food!

    1. Did you like the waterless pedi? You’re so lucky you got to spend time with your mama! And I think it’s awesome that you found a great running trail! I’m not sure I’m ready for the humidity to be back!!

I liked it…although I missed soaking my feet in a tub..I guess I could do the same at the beach, pool, or my own tub. I thought it was really clean and I liked how quiet it was. If you find a Gilt or other type of deal I would recommend it. You should check out some of the trails on the VA side…but it may be a little of a trek for you.

Thanks friend! Aww so nice… maybe I’ll see your folks out on the course one day 🙂

It was nice! They even gave carnations to the moms following the race.

It was SOOO good!! My faves are usually Mango and Peach… this def topped it.

      1. Run Jenny Run

Hope you get to try it! Let me know if you do. I’ve never gotten a fish pedicure either – I am a bit scared of the fish…even when I am in the ocean 🙂

      1. Run Jenny Run

Thanks Sharon – I’ll let him know. Summer/flip fops are a good excuse for pedicures. I could definitely see you trying a fish pedicure – you are so adventurous 🙂 Oh so I decided to stay in DC for Memorial Day weekend, so I will not be running the Boston Run to Remember – so I look forward to your recap in a few weeks 🙂

    1. Jenny – what a great week recap! Those tacos look AMAZING and a watermelon margarita sounds just divine.

I think it’s so cool that you and your mom ran a race together. Lovely!

I did another run along the Seawall today…jealous? 😉

Oh you should! Hope you had a good Mother’s Day weekend. Can’t wait to catch up and read about Eugene.

The best part of running on the Virginia side of the Potomac River is panoramic views of Washington, DC . Hopefully you’ll get a chance to run there next time you are in DC.

    1. The Mount Vernon Trail is amazing! How awesome that you have access to run it on a regular basis. I’ve never heard of a waterless manicure but I love the idea. The folks in California could really use waterless manicures to aid in their drought situation, eh? Congratulations to Cliff – you must celebrate! What an amazing way to celebrate Mother’s Day with your mom, too. Such a great bonding experience. Looking forward to your race recaps!

Very lucky to live in area with so many trails/paths within walking/running distance. Yes, the folks in Cali could use this – according to their site they save 10 gallons of water per nail service. Hope you have a great week!

    1. A Mother’s Day race sounds like so much fun, Jenny; I’m so glad you were able to participate in this with your mom! What a great way to spend time together. Um, those tacos look amazing; I’m so jealous that you and the gals were able to get together and hang out for Julie’s birthday – I want to come! Ha! I’ve never heard of a waterless mani/pedi salon, but it looks really lovely; hope you enjoyed it! Thanks so much for linking up with the blog and I hope your week is off to a great start!

Tara we need to get you to DC stat! The tacos were good and luckily it wasn’t too hot later in the evening (although if you went running it was humid). Thanks for hosting the linkup! Hope you have a wonderful week.

      1. Run Jenny Run

It was neat! I thought I would miss my feet soaking in the tub – but that is what a bath/beach/pool will be for haha. The run was certainly a fun week to kick off the day.

      1. Run Jenny Run

It was nice, and I’ll get to do a mini race-cation with her this weekend 🙂

    1. Great week of training! Looks like a super fun Oiselle meetup and those tacos look fantastic!

This is the first I’ve heard of waterless manicures and pedicures. Sounds like an interesting experience! I actually haven’t been to a salon/spa to get my nails done in over a year. I pedicured my own feet recently but missed the spa pampering experience!

Thanks Lara! My legs were like bricks the next day

    1. Very cool that you did a mother’s day race with your mom 🙂 And that watermelon margarita sounds amazing! I’ve never done a waterless manicure but it sounds like something I should look into. My hands have been super dry recently.
