Friday Five – Fitness Trends I Will/Will Not Try

July 10, 2015

Woo hoo for Friday! This week I’ve been super wiped out and going to sleep at 8:30PM (not sure why).  This weekend I look forward to catching up on some household items, answering comments, and going through my blog reader.  Oh yeah…there is the 12-13 mile long run too! Today I am linking up with Mar, Courtney, and Cynthia and the theme is Five Fitness Trends I Will Not Try.  Bonus – I thought it would be fun to also list Five Fitness Trends I Will Try.

Five Fitness Trends I Will Not Try

1. Rompers – For running.  Remember, these? I do have a few rompers for casual wear, but don’t expect me to go running in them πŸ™‚

2. Mud/Color Runs – Several people have asked me to join them on mud/color runs (and they look fun), but I don’t want to get dirty or have things thrown at me.  Plus….I’ve been reading too many stories about mud run illnesses lately.

3. Crossfit – I know, I know…so many people love and swear by it, but for some reason it does not appeal to me (plus I see the trainer one on one).

4. Trapeze School – This is one I would want to try, but I know the height aspect would paralyze me.  I’ve seen videos and photos of friends participating in this and it looks so cool.

5. Barefoot Running – I don’t even like walking barefoot, so I don’t think I will enjoy running barefoot. I’ve tried minimalist shoes before and was not a fan (for me).

Five Fitness Trends I Will Try

1. SUP – I still haven’t gone! DC also has SUP Yoga, how neat/challenging is that?

2. Orangetheory Fitness – I know Abby loves them and Sue has written about OTF in the past.  Workouts are diverse and intensity is based on heart rate.

3. Cleanse – I am open to a short (as in 3 days) juice cleanse.

4. Aerial Yoga – I’m not sure if this is something I would do regularly (since I love CPY), but I would like to try it once.  I heard Spark Yoga in Arlington, VA is a good place to try.

5. Fuse Pilates – My friend Ali loves this class so I said I would join her one day. Luckily there is a studio in my neighborhood.

Have you tried any of these fitness trends before?

Do you have any races/long runs this weekend?

That makes sense. I like the 1:1 aspect of the trainer.

Agreed! A couple of friends said they saw someone running barefoot during the BWC 5K – eeks since the streets are not the cleanest!

You are right about the color runs! Afraid of the choke factor.

    1. I haven’t tried any of this stuff. Except I did wear a running dress a in a half. Not the best idea. It’s now a swimsuit coverup. Ha! I’ll be doing the same mileage this weekend. Good luck.

Thanks! Hope your long run went well. I’ve only recently seen a running dress now that you mention it. Nice you were able to convert its use as a swim coverup )

Your post actually inspired me to add it to my list! It looked like so much fun πŸ™‚

    1. 8:30 p.m.? Sounds like my usual bedtime! Haha. So um… running rompers? I feel like those would cause wedgies. Not for me. I’m also not interested in any mud runs, but my sis and I did a Color Run once. It wasn’t bad. You don’t really have to get that messy (ppl who do are prob going in the color toss after the race). I love SUP! And I’m trying SUP yoga for the first time this Sunday. Will let you know how it is!

Haha it was nice to unplug and go to sleep that early. I wish I woke up earlier the next morning… I think I got out of bed at 6:30! Looked like you had a good time at SUP. Did you like your location? Is it less crowded than Jacks Boathouse (I know thats not the name anymore haha) the one in Gtown.

      1. Run Jenny Run

You should try it! I suppose if I had a friend who wanted to go, I’d spectate and take pics πŸ™‚

    1. Yeah, I thought the color run was pretty gross. I will definitely not do one again, but I can see how people would like them. And yes, if I would have read about any of the illnesses around mud runs I would never have done one! Scary!

PS–are you signed up for any fall J&A races?!

The nice part about color/mud runs they attract participants who may have never considered a 5K or 10M. Those mud runs look tough. The obstacle course looks cool – but I’d do it without mud haah. I’m signed up for the Surf n Santa. How about you?

    1. I’ve done the mud run thing before but don’t really have the desire to do one again. No interest in color runs either. I enjoy SUP, although I like kayaking better (easier to go faster!). Have a good weekend and good luck on the long run

I always forget about kayaking! I think my mom booked us on a kayaking tour when we head to Alaska! That will be nice πŸ™‚

      1. Run Jenny Run

I hope you get to try! I remember hearing about trapeze for the first time when they were a SATC episode haha.

    1. I too want to try Orange Theory Fitness. I don’t know why I haven’t, we have one here. I guess I’m scared I’ll like it too much because it is pricey. A bit too pricey for me to join, unfortunately. I’d also like to try barre.

I won’t wear a romper at all! I don’t think it would be flattering for me and I have a really basic style, just not into trendy things that I might only wear for a season.

I’m hoping even if I do like it..the location (right now there is one in Arlington, VA eventually they will have one in DC in a neighborhood to the east of me) will likely deter me from joining (plus I have my gym haha). I mentioned to one of my good friends we should try it before she moved.

Different strokes for different folks! I think the upside to color/mud runs is more people are participating in them.

      1. Run Jenny Run

Haha it would def help you get over your fear! Hope you get to try it soon.

      1. Run Jenny Run

The rompers make me smile! I remember when I ran Seawheeze in 2013 I saw a few girls running in the runsie (they looked great on them) – but I know it would bother me – especially with the porta potties haha.

    1. I love your lists! I can’t believe running rompers were a thing… eek. I’m going on a trip next week and get to SUP a bit. It’s awesome, but I only get to do it on vacation. There’s a place near me that does SUP yoga, but I can’t figure out if you have to bring your own board. (And is it bad if you fall in?!) Maybe I’ll look into that when I get back. Thanks for the reminder via your list. πŸ˜‰

Oooh I hope you had fun! Can’t wait to read about it. SUP Yoga looks like it would be cool – I read on another blogger that they give you a little anchor so your board doesn’t float away (I always wondered…)

      1. Run Jenny Run

Yes let’s definitely try one of them. I think I would prob get to an Orange Theory sooner than Sup Yoga. I’ll send you an email soon!

      1. Run Jenny Run

Haha true! I’ve actually swum in the Potomac (eww) for the DC Tri a few years back (it was murky)

      1. Run Jenny Run

I feel you would be great at both! I think there are OTF locations in Washington and Oregon πŸ™‚ Ahh makes sense to use Vibrams during DVD workouts!

      1. Run Jenny Run

I remember your SUP pics from last summer/vacation! Been dying to go! Looking like next month will be it πŸ™‚

    1. I’ve done The Color Run and Color Me Rad and learned that color runs are only fun if you do them with friends. I did Color Me Rad with Adam and some other people and had a blast, but then I did The Color Run by myself and thought it was kind of bleh. I would never ever do a mud run though – so disgusting! Plus I imagine the mud gets super heavy and would drag you down.

I want to try SUPing and I would be open to Orange Theory Fitness if I could go with a friend.

I do like the name of Color Me Rad! Perhaps we can go SUPing after the Miami Half!

    1. I’ve done a color run and it was so not worth it! A friend wanted to do it, so we did it, and we both agreed we won’t do another one. I was signed up for a SUP yoga class at Wanderlust, but it was pretty cold (it was not even 60*, in June, and I had been shivering all morning!) so we opted out. I think it would be fun to try in better conditions.

Too bad it was so cold then (I would love 60* right now though HAHA). Hope you get to try this summer.

      1. Run Jenny Run

Haha I guess it was more in the news last year – but Lulu puts one out each year. Can’t wait to SUP in August!

    1. I too want to try Orange Theory, Arial yoga and SUPing! I did a 3-day cleanse and it was hard but good. Miss you!!

      1. Run Jenny Run

Miss you too! Have SO MUCH fun running the PNW! Maybe your next visit to DC we can do one of the 3 πŸ™‚

      1. Run Jenny Run

That is good to know! They look so thin from above haha. I’ll let you know how it goes! I’ll be going in August πŸ™‚

    1. I refuse to try mud runs/obstacle runs because I am so clumsy I just know I would get really hurt and I don’t want to do anything to jeopardize my running.
I really am obsessed with Orange Theory. I hope you get to try it out sometime. I will admit the first class was the hardest, but I knew it would be good for me and now I LOVE it!

I hear ya – I’ve read couple instances in which someone has gotten hurt from the mud run. I love your posts about OTF! Do they have referrals so you get some credits if I try it? I’ll let you know how it goes. So when you are visiting us in DC next year….. this will be on the list too haha.

      1. Run Jenny Run

You will prob be great at SUP and OTF (I told Sherry the same thing) haha.

    1. Ewww to the norovirus being transmitted in the mud runs, and it doesn’t surprise me at all. I got enough mud at Ragnar WV to last me a lifetime! I don’t think I’ll be trying a running romper anytime soon either!
