Chicago Marathon Training Week 4 – 6/22-6/28

June 29, 2015

Last week = rain + thunder + lightning.  The upside to all this rain….it cooled DC a bit! On Sunday we were greeted with some amazing weather for the Baltimore Women’s Classic 5K – wasn’t the Baltimore skyline gorgeous?!?  Today I am linking up with Tara at Running n’ Reading for the Weekend Update.

Monday 6/22– 2 mile walk

Tuesday 6/23 – 2 mile walk

Wednesday 6/24 – 2 mile walk + 3 mile run @11:42 min/mile

Thursday 6/25 – 2 mile walk + 15 minutes cycling + 60 minutes personal training

Friday 6/26 – 2 mile walk

Saturday 6/27 – 6 mile run @12:00 min/mile

Sunday 6/28 – 1/2 mile run + Baltimore Womens Classic 5K @10:38 min/mile

Total: 22.6 miles (10 walk | 12.6 run)

Swim

**Crickets** Unfortunately I did not make it to the pool this week. I wanted to swim on Saturday, but it poured all day.  This upcoming week I will be staying at my parents house for the holiday weekend – I’ll make sure I take advantage of their neighborhood pool.

Bike

I clipped in (at the gym) for a 15 minute ride and squeezed in 5 miles  before my personal training session.   I will need to up my bike time over the next two months.

Run

Like last week, I ran three times!  My first run was on Wednesday morning (what what…again?? turning into a morning runner??).  Rachel and I went on a 3 mile run @11:42 min/mile (12:00, 11:49, 11:21) through Dupont and Adams Morgan.  We chatted the whole way and I was pleasantly surprised with our negative splits (we typically go out and just run and not set intentions to negative split).  This week the long run was only 6 miles and the plan was to run with Rachel on Saturday morning.  As you all know, it rained all day so I hung out with my nemesis (Mr. TM) for a 6 mile run @12:00 min/mile.

Run #3 (BWC 5k) was the highlight of the week.  Recap coming this week, but it was 1/2 mile warm up + 3.1 miles @10:38 min/mile (10:50, 10:33, 10:41) with my old roommate Alyssa (she also ran the 2013 Annapolis Half Marathon – discount code here if you are interested in signing up for that race).  My mom walked the race and we got to catch up with Mar at the end of the race.

Random (saw this after the race) – cool basketball flooring (I think by Under Armour).  Maryland love!

Fun

This past week I tried Baan Thai with my friend Jenn.  It was good, but it was on the spicy side (2 chili symbol on the menu, with 4 chili the spiciest).  I am a bit of a wimp when it comes to spice.

On Sunday, took a little adventure to Butler’s Orchard.

Picked almost four pounds worth of blueberries!! Yummmmmm!

Also picked english snap peas and blackberries. It was such a nice day to go picking.

Do you have any blueberry recipes you recommend?

How was your weekend?

I’ve been taking pints into work and eating them plain – SO GOOD. Thanks for the lemon/blueberry recipe – that is one loaf I’d like to make. I think I may make a crisp for the 4th. Hope you’re having a good week!

I hope you get a chance to go pick some strawberries and blueberries! I wish I could take spicier food – I feel I am missing out so much!

I’ve gone through half of them! Mainly eating them fresh for breakfast (about a pint a day) and making some scones/blueberry bread 🙂 Hope you calf is feeling better – love reading about your brick workouts!

Mhmmm – now I wish I went strawberry picking a couple weeks ago. Looks like tomorrow I will run 10 in the drizzle. Want to get the long run in earlier this weekend.

Awwww – seems very family friendly as well. I foresee many new Butler’s Orchard memories for you with Baby T.

    1. Jenny, you did GREAT at your race!!!! I’m so glad you were there with Mar and I loved the medals that they gave out; so pretty. Sounds like you had a really nice training week (I love the morning run, by the way!!) and you have me cracking up with your “crickets” comment in the swimming section. It’s a lot to get done, girl!! No worries! Hope you have a great day and thanks so much for linking up with the blog.

It was nice to see Mar and also many people run their first 5K. Hahah – thanks (about the crickets)! Of course it won’t be sunny when I want to swim outside this holiday weekend (it may be an indoor workout). Hope you are having a good week!

Glad you had nice weather as well. Hopefully not too many on the TM this season 🙂

    1. I’m addicted to blackberries right now! Yummy. You ran in the morning again? It’s going to become a thing. Congrats on your negative split. I always feel like that is a success no matter what else happens.

I’m starting to like it (not so bad waking up), but it helps to have a friend to run with. Not sure if I could do it myself. The blackberries were good!

    1. Oh I would love to go blueberry picking!! They look so delicious! We’ve got a lot of fruit at home and I need to start doing something creative with it all!

The Baltimore Classic looked like a beautiful day from the pictures I saw on Instagram (including yours!). Glad you had a solid week of training. I haven’t started officially training for a race yet (though I do have the Philly 10K on 8/30), so I’m trying to stick to 3 runs a week right now.

I hope you get a chance to go! It wasn’t prime picking yet for blackberries (at least where/when we went) so they are prob bountiful very soon. Hopefully you can join the BWC 5K next year. Good luck training for your 10K!

    1. Sounds like a fun weekend! Awesome job on the morning runs! 🙂 I love that your mom participates in some of your races with you. That’s so great! Looks like you got some yummy goods from Butler’s! Don’t think i have any blueberry recipes… I usually eat them alone or on top of greek yogurt or cottage cheese. Simple, but tasty.

Thanks – mornings have been better than expected! Now I will need to try dragging myself out of bed to run by myself. I’ll have to try the cottage cheese suggestion!

    1. I feel like everyone got delicious berries last weekend but me! Haha 🙂

Looks like you are very consistent in your training! I seem to be going through swings of ups and downs lately. Are you training for a triathlon or do you just cross train with swimming and biking?

I’m always intimidated by swimming … I took lessons as a kid so I feel like I should be better than I am. But truth is I was never really good at the technique part. Luckily I can stay afloat though!

Hahah i felt the same way when everyone went strawberry picking a couple of weeks ago 🙂 My main focus is marathon training, but I do have a sprint tri coming up in August. The swimming and biking have been great with cross training – but I haven’t been a stickler with the workouts like I am with the running. Hope you get to a pool (or berry field) soon 🙂 Have a great weekend!

Thanks, Sun! I’ve been eating the fresh blueberries plain and they have been great. Oh I think I will make that crumb cake for my parent’s party. Yum!

    1. We had a coldfront here and it’s been nice. Temps in the 70s in the mornings before work, so that’s when I run now! Summer has kinda just forced me to adapt. I drove by the blueberry farm today and I should probably go pick some! They are one of my favorite fruits. My mom used to make a pie with blueberries, yogurt, and whipped topping. I should find the recipe, it’s really, really simple but very delicious!

That does sound delicious! Hope you get to pick some berries and make it soon. It is nice to get the runs in before the humidity rolls in 🙂

        Hahha seriously… or snowing! I wouldn’t mind a freak snow now (wishful…never gonna happen…thinking). 🙂

Almost an hour of picking, but it was fun 🙂 Im hoping I will be a full convert 🙂

Another nice week in the books! When I was taking photos from the BWC..I was trying to channel your awesome harbor shots 🙂

Thank you, Sharon! Have you done that with the boys?

    1. Great workouts! Those blueberries look sooo good! Running on Veggies has a great pre-workout blueberry maca muffin recipe 🙂 I’ve made it before and really liked them! But I am also not opposed to just eating the berries by the handful haha
