Chicago Marathon Training Week 3 – 6/15-6/21

June 22, 2015

Last week was another scorcher…when/will I ever acclimate to the heat? Maybe not… it will always feel uncomfortable to me.  Today I am linking up with Tara at Running n’ Reading for the Weekend Update.

Monday 6/15– 2 mile walk + 60 minutes personal training

Tuesday 6/16 – 2 mile walk + 45 minutes cycling

Wednesday 6/17 – 2 mile walk + 3 mile run @12:13 min/mile

Thursday 6/18 – 2 mile walk

Friday 6/19 – 2 mile walk + 2 mile warm up/cooldown + 3 mile run @ 11:37 min/mile

Saturday 6/20 – 60 minutes personal training + 20 minutes cycling

Sunday 6/21 – 8 mile run @ 12:00 min/mile

Total: 26 miles (10 walk | 16 run)

Swim

I missed both of my swim workouts last week (I was soo good the previous week).  Yesterday would have been perfect to squeeze in an outdoor swim, but I was too lazy to head downtown (plus I am temporarily without a car). I need to find a balance between my swim and bike workouts (cycling got the priority this week).

Bike

On Tuesday afternoon friend Rachel and I went to Flywheel for a cycling class/bike workout #1.  We originally  had running on our schedule, but it ended up being one of the hottest days of the year so we opted for an indoor activity.  According to my stats, I biked a little over 17 miles during the 45 minute class.  Bike workout #2 was on the shorter side.  I hopped onto a bike for 20 minutes following my personal training session (post still to come..I promise I haven’t forgotten).  I think I got in 5 easy miles.

Run

I ran three times last week and they were not easy.  I was particularly proud of my Wednesday run as Rachel and I ran in the morning before work (a weekday first).  We ran 3 miles @12:13 min/mile (12:14, 12:16, 12:06).  At 5:30AM it was much cooler out and we had the DC streets (more like sidewalks…but you know what I mean) all to ourselves.  It was also nice to hit my 10,000 step goal so early in the morning.  We hope to continue this each week.

My second run of the week occurred on Friday after work.  I was hoping to complete my 8 mile long run that afternoon (and run my tempo during the weekend), but I could not physically or mentally take it – it was incredibly hot.  I ended up running 5 miles: 1 mile warm up + 3 miles @11:37 min/mile (11:11, 12:00, 11:40) + 1 mile cool down. Thank goodness for the trees that lined the reflecting pool – they provided some much needed shade.

On Sunday I completed my third run…on my nemesis…the treadmill! It was 8 miles of fun @12:00 min/mile… a Lifetime movie helped me get through it. Although I’ve been running 3 times a week..I’ve been neglecting the speed workout.  That particular run has been… survive.

Fun

The past couple of weeks I’ve participated in the Fitbit Workweek Hustle Challenge hosted by Hoho Runs (thanks for inviting me).  This past week I won the challenge! It was fun participating and it definitely motivated me to get extra steps in each day.

On Saturday my parents hosted an engagement dinner for my sister and her fiancee.  It was also the first time both families met.  I had a yummy salad for my appetizer.

A rib-eye for my main course.. it was good! I ate half and took home the rest.  Cliff and I split a cheesecake for dessert…mmmm….sorry no pic.

This past weekend was also spent watching some movies (The Great Escape and McFarland USA) and relaxing.

How was your weekend?

Have you participated in a step challenge before?

    1. Congrats on winning the Fitbit challenge! I’m trying to convince my parents and sister to do one with me, but it doesn’t look like it’s happening. haha. Nice work on your outdoor runs this week — it was soooo hot. And kudos on making it on the treadmill! I know you hate it. 😉 All of my runs last week were on the treadmill. It was tough. Movies/tv definitely helps…

I asked my parents and sister if they wanted Fitbits, but they said no! We should connect then. This week is much better temperature wise, hoping to avoid the treadmill 🙂 Although I should use it for the shorter “speedier” workouts.

    1. I love the heat but I’ve been finding it hard to acclimate to as well! I’ve been keeping my runs much shorter Bc luckily I’m not training for anything right now. Sorry you had to resort to the treadmill!! I love family dinners. Your meal looks splendid. I was home this weekend celebrating Fathers Day and meeting my brand new nephew!

So nice your nephew arrived around Father’s Day. Glad you were able to go home and spend time with them. I a looking forward to the Fourth of July – I’ll see my cousins and other family friends. That is a good idea to keep the runs short if you are not training for anything in particular. Luckily this week has been okay.

Thanks Mar! I know…THANK goodness its cooled down this week.

    1. The only thing good about living in upstate NY is the summers aren’t too bad. Oh sure, it does get humid, but nothing like where you live or where I used to live (TX).

I do not do well with heat & humidity & ZOOMA Annapolis illustrated that very well.

I enjoyed McFarland, USA: Disney, Costner & running – what could be bad? Only McConahey & Born to Run could be better. 😉 One hopes, anyway.

Glad you have nice weather in upstate. I really enjoyed the Finger Lakes region when I was there for the Wineglass Half Marathon – perfect fall running conditions. Hope you are having a great week.

Seriously! Luckily with the heat I am hitting my goal pace for Chicago (although… does this mean I should be aiming faster), but would be nice to get in some speedier runs outside.

The struggle bus is full! Luckily it has been cooler this week with the rain. Hope you are having a good one!

Thanks, I know my parents were excited about meeting my future brother in laws family. I looked back at an old training post from last year “run was so humid” .. .but it definitely feels hotter! I wish I wrote down the temperatures.

    1. I’m the same–I’m not sure I’ll ever acclimate to the heat. I was looking back through my running logs trying to figure out how I managed it last summer. I realized it was much cooler last summer. We had some scorchers here and there, but overall it was pretty mild. It feels like we just getting hit with intense heat and humidity. I am hoping that it can’t get much worse now that it’s summer! But I have been thinking about moving my workouts inside like you did on the worst days. Biking 17 miles in one cycling class is awesome!

Glad you took record of the temperature! I looked back at my training log and I wrote “hot + humid”. You are right… I don’t think it can get much worse. I’ve been tolerating the heat for my shorter runs, but those are probably good ones that I can take inside to work on speed. I wish I liked the treadmill more. Hope you are having a good week!

    1. You smoked me this week! Congratulations. I think there is an extra spot in the challenge I’m in this week. I didn’t host, but I’ll tag you! I never get used to the heat but I do get up EARLY to get those runs in. I can’t imagine doing it later in the day.

You were great! It was funny to see who were early in the week runners and late in the week runners. It was good motivation. Ahh rats…missed the invite!

    1. Congrats on a great training week, Jenny, and on your step challenge – woo hoo! My women’s running club, the Hot Legs, did one last year; it was a lot of fun, too. I STILL have not seen McFarland; I’ve got to rent it soon. Thanks so much for linking up with the blog today; hope your Monday has gone well!

I hope you get to see McFarland soon – it was a nice feel good movie. Those challenges are fun. Now I kind of wish I participated in the RW Run Streak… I’ll just do my own 🙂

    1. I don’t like the heat and humidity either. I acclimate some, but my paces are always so much slower. I can manage better when I’m not in direct sunlight, though. It seems to impact me more on the run than on the bike, although I get very dehydrated on hot cycling days, too. Keep it up and get in the pool on those hot days!

My pace is slower as well – luckily still within marathon pace, but not at tempo pace. At least we are out and about. You are right, hot days like these are good pool days.

I love my steak! Nice to have it the day after. I wish I took pics of the honey miso carrots..soo good.

    1. The heat really is terrible. I am going to try SO SO SO hard to get up and run before the sun rises a couple of times this week just to see what it’s like. I haven’t gone for an early morning run since last fall unless you count race days!

I’m holding you to that personal training post 😉

Hope the morning runs went well this week. I made it out Wednesday and will do the same Saturday (just so much easier to wake up early on weekends). Yes, def going to get that training post b/c my trainer is leaving me for Philly 🙁

      1. Run Jenny Run

Its tough! It was stressful at first and have moved workouts around. Now I know (at minimum) to do 2 x strength, 3 x running, 2 x swimming, and 2x biking. I haven’t had a perfect week yet, and they will probably be rare. Sometimes I shift my training days.. so the week tends to get back heavy. Having a running buddy and knowing I’ll log my training def helps with the accountability factor.

Thanks, Sharon! Their wedding will be in October… nice and cool (hopefully haha). Ahhh I was wondering where you were!

      1. Run Jenny Run

I look like I’ve jumped into a pool after these runs 🙂 You are probably right, hoping in two weeks these runs will be a little more bearable.

    1. I feel you! I don’t think I will ever get used to it either. And is it just me or did it get super hot super fast?! Great job pushing through!

      1. Run Jenny Run

Funny…each year I am “surprised” how hot it is. I guess I mentally block out how uncomfortable I was the year before. Thanks!

    1. way to get yourself out there, even during the heat! i’ll admit that i’ve been skipping runs on mornings where it’s 80 and humid, but i guess i have to stop that soon since training is going to start in a couple weeks and that weather seems pretty consistent out east.

Def has a mind of its own. This week has been pretty cool (still a little humid), but nice to be walking without sweating.

Thanks, Sun! A pretty good week. Hopefully my last “long one” on the mill.

    1. I love those step challenges, they definitely motivate me. Great job on it last week! And I’ve really been struggling with the heat too. It didn’t seem that hard last Summer but I think we had a milder summer last year.

    1. Congrats on winning the Fitbit challenge! I’ve participated in a few of those as well. I’ve won some but usually I’m in the middle lol! Yes the heat is brutal here on the Gulf Coast. It seems like it got super hot really fast this year.
