Another week in the books! This past weekend I was able walk through the Udvar-Hazy Center (the “companion facility” to the Air and Space Museum at the National Mall) for the Dulles Runway 10K – isn’t the hangar spectacular?
Monday 9/14– 2 mile walk + 2.5 mile run + 30 minutes personal training
Tuesday 9/15– 2 mile walk
Wednesday 9/16 – 2 mile walk
Thursday 9/17 – 2 mile walk
Friday 9/18 – 2 mile walk
Saturday 9/19– Dulles Runway 10K
Sunday 9/20 – Metric Marathon 1 mile walk + 18 mile run + 1 mile walk
Total: 38.7 miles (12 walk | 27.7 run)
Training wise this week started off better than most. I kicked it off with a 2.5 mile run and an abbreviated personal training session (it had been awhile since my last). My legs and arms were definitely feeling it the next day!
Run
Run #1: 2.5 miles easy
Coming off a 20 mile + weekend, I decided to go on an easy (sans watch) 2.5 mile run before my training session. The legs felt okay, which was a good sign.
Run #2: 6.2 miles @11:41 min/mile (11:30, 11:31, 11:19, 12:06, 12:14, 11:48)
On Saturday I ran the Dulles Runway 10K with my friend Rachel! My legs were definitely tight the first couple of miles (especially in the quads). I was pretty happy with our splits – which were fairly consistent except for miles #4 and #5 in which there was a strong headwind. It was also nice to see Deb, Erin, and Kathryn (+Preston and Baby Bump T) there!
Run #3: 18 miles @12:00-13:00 min/mile
Remember that time I asked for help choosing between the Navy Air Force Half Marathon or the Metric Marathon to use as part of my long run? I ended up signing up for the Metric Marathon. After the 10K and running errands all day Saturday (when in the burbs I hit up all the big box stores), I stayed at my parent’s house for the night because they live about 30 minutes away from Columbia, Maryland. I figured I would get an extra 30-60 minutes of sleep. Well sleep I did….because I overslept!! I snoozed three alarms and ignored my mom’s knock on the door (I went back to sleep). By the time I woke up, I realized I would not make it to the start on time – doh! I got dressed, got in my car and drove back to DC. Since there were about 5,000 runners+ racing downtown, I knew I could not run my normal long run route (which is basically the Navy-Air Force course) so I went to the gym. I took stretch/water/bio breaks every time 60 minutes passed on the treadmill and the machine stopped. It was not a pretty run, but I got through it.
Fun
A little backwards, but on Friday I met my friend for dinner in downtown Silver Spring. We went to A.G Kitchen and it happened to be Guacamole Week (they even had specialty guac drinks – which I did not partake in). Here is a trio of guac: classic, edamame and cheese.
I had fish tacos, which I’ve been craving for awhile.
And a banana bread dessert to share!
How was your weekend?
Have you ever overslept and missed a race or run before?

September 23, 2015Sorry to hear you missed the race. Thankfully I never have but that is my biggest fear the night before the race is over sleeping. Congrats on your 10k. Guacamole wk!!! Why don’t they have anything around here like that? That sounds delicious. And all your food looks tasty.

September 27, 2015I probably needed that extra sleep 🙂 Thanks Lacey! Every week should be Guac week!

September 23, 2015What a bummer to miss your race sleeping through and missing your mom’s knock on the door. I guess you needed that extra sleep. I’ve never overslept a race or training run. and actually I am always up early on race morning. And now you have made me really hungry for breakfast after seeing all those great food pics. I love fish tacos too and had those after my recent 5k race when all the girls went to lunch!

September 27, 2015I hadn’t missed a race in years. You are right, my body needed the extra sleep. Haha sorry to make you hungry – perhaps a breakfast taco this week? 🙂 These fish tacos were pretty tasty, I find they can be really bad or really good..haven’t had an inbetween.

September 23, 2015Girl that hangar picture is amazing! So cool! Glad you had a good 10K race….sorry you missed the other one! You obviously needed that sleep! Looks like a super fun weekend!!!

September 23, 201518 miles on the treadmill sounds like good mental training to me!
Great job on that 10K! After racing a 10K I don’t know if I would have been able to get in 18+ miles the next day. That’s really impressive!

September 27, 2015Definitely a mental battle! I was looking forward to running the course, but it is what it is 🙂 Thanks, Kristina!

September 23, 2015I love the Udvar Hazy Center. I have occasionally bailed on a race. Usually not oversleeping, but waking up and making a conscious decision that it isn’t as important to me as some rest. Probably because I am a serial racer so individual races aren’t as important to me as someone who peaks for a few events a year. Nice job on the 18!

September 27, 2015I would love to go back to the Hazy Center and see the other exhibits (we were only limited to that area). I’ve overslept in the past (when I use to commute to Baltimore – so it was definitely a sleep issue). Making a conscious decision to skip a race for some rest makes sense. Thanks, Kelli!

September 23, 2015I’m pretty sure running a long run on a treadmill was way harder mentally than the race would’ve been! Stinks that you overslept though and that so many races were going on affecting your routes. I’ve only bailed on a race once and it was due to risk of getting injured, and I haven’t overslept for a race (I set 3 alarms) but I have missed several morning training runs due to sleep. Sometimes you just need sleep!
Those fish tacos look delicious. I love tacos!

September 27, 2015It was – I was secretly, not so secretly happy when the timer went out on the treadmills. It gave me a chance to stretch, fill the water bottle and take bio breaks. You are right, I did need the sleep. I love tacos too 🙂

September 23, 2015I love fish tacos! I’ve been stuck on them for a while now. So sorry you overslept and missed your race, but I think maybe it was your body’s way of saying I’M TIRED and rest was probably what you needed most. Congrats on 18 TM miles. I’m pretty sure I couldn’t have done that! Was that your last long run for Chicago?

September 27, 2015Same! I am still craving more 🙂 You are right, I needed that sleep. This was my last long run. I was hoping to get to 20, but I was okay with ending my marathon on the TM with 18 and almost 4 hours. I did get a couple miles walking the rest of the day. Hope you get your participant guide tomorrow!
Chaitali
September 23, 2015Wow, so impressive you did that long run on the treadmill! I’m going to have a 10 mile run coming up that I’ll have to do on the treadmill and that’s bad enough. That guacamole looks amazing! I’m a big fan of guacamole in almost all varieties 🙂

September 25, 2015Sorry to hear about missing the race. I haven’t overslept but did miss a race along time ago. It was a race where my older brother also registered, but morning of it was a downpour and he didn’t want to go, so we just skipped it. Those fish tacos look yummy along with the banana bread!
