Chicago Marathon Training Week 11 – 8/10-8/16

August 17, 2015

Vacation has been great! My mom is a planner extraordinaire so our days have been filled with fishing, hiking, walking, and exploring the different ports.  I wish I paid attention to her itinerary in advance, because I could have scheduled in some early morning runs while I was in Ketchikan and Juneau (here is a great post by Pam of We Run Disney on “How to get it done: training while on vacation”).

Monday 8/10– Fishing

Tuesday 8/11 – Walking

Wednesday 8/12 – Walking

Thursday 8/13 – 1 mile walk + 4 mile elliptical @11:30-12:00 min/mile + 1 mile walk

Friday 8/14 – Hiking

Saturday 8/15– 3 mile run @11:36 min/mile

Sunday 8/16 – 13 mile run + Boordy Vineyard 5K Rest day

Total: 9 miles (2 walk | 3 run | 4 elliptical )

Swim

No lap pool on the ship – I feel prepared (mileage wise) for the swim portion of the tri. Open water… that is another story.

Bike

In hindsight…I should have used the ship’s stationary bikes, oh well.

Run

Run #1: 1 mile walk + 4 mile elliptical @11:30-12:00 min/mile + 1 mile walk

Like last week I used the ship’s elliptical machine for my mid-week run.  Nothing special about this one.

Run #2: 3 mile run @11:36 min/mile (12:09, 11:30, 11:09)

On Saturday I went on a quick 3 mile run in Anchorage.  If I had my act together (and known I would be in the city for the day) I would have emailed Kristen to coordinate a run!

The trail/views were spectacular.  I even stopped by the Skinny Raven running store when I was walking around town.

That weekend, the city was hosting the Big Wild Life Runs event (multiple races ranging from a kid’s 2K to an ultra). I did research prior to my vacation if there would be any races while I was there, but the site (not the race site) I used only listed the kid’s 2K on Saturday.  I was bummed to learn that the 1 mile race was also held that day.  Oh well… another excuse to visit Alaska!

Run #3: 13 mile run + Boordy Vineyard 5K Rest day

This was the 16 mile run that did not happen 🙁 My family and I had an overnight flight from Alaska to DC.  My plan was to run 13 miles in DC and head up north for the Boordy Vineyard 5K (I was so looking forward to this one). I ended up getting sick mid-flight (nauseous, shortness of breath) so I decided it would be a better idea to rest that day.  Bummed I didn’t get the long mileage, but I will be okay.

Fun

Here is a sneak peak of my vacation fun! Salmon fishing (we caught and released).

Hiking near Mendenhall Glacier.

    1. I always get up and run early on vacation. No one seems to miss me. I also look for a local 5k when we visit the beach. I’ve run half marathons either while vacationing or, if it’s a driving trip, on the way there or back. So sorry to hear you got sick mid flight. I hope you are feeling better now. Chicago is coming up pretty quick. Yikes!

I can’t believe how quickly it is approaching. I have 18 slated for this weekend!

Thank you! See you soon 🙂 I have a feeling I’ll be ravenous after Saturday’s long run haha.

    1. Looks like a wonderful vacation! It’s great to get away for a bit and going to Alaska seems like a perfect place to visit during the summer months.

I’m the worst when it comes to training while on vacation. I tend to get lazy about getting up early and the only exercise I usually do is sightseeing and walking between shops 😉 But I figure everyone needs a break once in awhile, right?

Exactly! I did bring my FB and hit my 10K + /day which was nice. We ended up walking more than I thought we would, which was nice.

Thanks Sharon! When I was hiking, I thought…oooh this is something you would do! There were several kiddos around too.

Thanks Tara! I’ll eventually get to a vacation recap. Don’t worry you didn’t miss my post, I posted privately while I was away and then live when I came back to upload photos (the internet was slow while I was away).

That is so funny! Which cruise ship did they go on? My friend from b-school went the week after I did (he actually proposed to his gf at Mendenhall Glacier). The food was good, we had king crab one day and I prob had fish/chips 3x while I was there 🙂 Surprisingly I did not post any food pics while I was away.

        1. That IS funny! My parents went on Norwegian. Is that the one you guys went on? So cute about your b-school friend! King crab and fish and chips sound amazing right now! Probably won’t go to Alaska until it’s time to run there. 🙂

    1. Thanks for including my post. It looks like you had a great vacation. I found it harder than I thought to get in my runs during my recent vacation, but managed to use the treadmill on our river boat to complete the mileage. One surprise was 3 guided bike rides and that was really fun. I can’t believe Chicago, Marine Corps and NYC marathons are coming up so soon. I feel so unprepared.

The guided bike rides sound like fun! When I was in Denmark a couple of summers ago one of my friends wanted to take me on a bike tour, but all the rentals were too big for me hehe. Hope you are enjoying life post vacation. I feel the same way about our upcoming marathons!
