Chicago Marathon Countdown – Packing List

September 30, 2015

Wednesdays are pretty nice – they signal the middle of the work week and it is a relatively calmer day for me (knock on wood).  Wednesday also means another Chicago Marathon Countdown post! Today I am sharing my marathon packing list:

If there is anything missing from my list feel free to comment or leave your link below.  My packing list has been updated since last year.

You may notice I have poncho, zip lock bags, and Aquaphor on my list.  I’ve been tracking obsessing over the Chicago weather forecast.  As of today October 11 will be 63F, partly cloud with a 10% chance of rain.

Earlier this week it was calling for rain – eeks! I hope hope hope for no rain at all.  I referred to one of my old posts, Tips for Running in the Rain, and also bookmarked a few others to read:

I’ve run a half marathon in the rain, so I guess would be quasi prepared if it did rain on race day.

Thanks to everyone who commented and gave suggestions last week – much appreciated! Here are my previous countdown posts:

Did I miss anything?

Have you run a race in the rain before?

    1. I don’t mind if it rains during a race (although maybe not a downpour) but I really dislike starting in the rain. It’s hard to wait at the starting line and really get prepared mentally. I love love your packing list. It looks similar to mine on half marathon days! Usually I overpack, but I’d rather be prepared!

I didn’t even think about that, starting in the rain would be miserable! Haha I rather overpack as well 🙂

Yeah – I know I def will leave something if I didn’t make one. Last year I was pretty good about making a NYC pile in the corner, this year that was not the case.

    1. I’m so excited for you that your big race is almost here! Your packing list looks great and definitely best to be prepared for different types of weather conditions. I’ve been fortunate and have never raced in super rainy weather. Light sprinkles is the worst it’s been. Hope the rain clears out of the forecast for your race!

Thanks Sun, and as you know…it definitely cleared out! I learned my lesson, 14 day forecasts will definitely change 🙂

    1. Great list! I have run two half marathons in steady rain. Once I get over the initial shock of it, I tend to forget about it. It is the only time I will wear a hat.

    1. Ooooh, as a list-lover I may have to save this, Jenny; it’s a great one! You know, I attempted my first full marathon in a rainstorm and covered about 21 miles before being pulled from the course for lightning; my second attempt (last December) was successful, but also in the rain – GAH! Are you noticing a pattern here? I’m hoping for better weather this December, but who knows? It sounds like you are very prepared; I wore shorts (it was in the upper 40s at the start), my singlet and a thin rain jacket on top (Flyer jacket from last year) and it worked out well. I also ran in Injinji toe socks and had no blisters which is quite an accomplishment for me because I ALWAYS get blisters. I think you’re going to be rain-free…that’s my official forecast. 😉 You’re so ready!!

Glad you liked it! I hope third time is a charm for you and there is no rain for your marathon! I packed my Flyer Jacket (from one of the sales – score) and I love that it can fit into the smallest space in my purse. I’ve never tried Injinji toe socks, I will need to check them out. I usually do not get toe blisters, but got one following Sunday’s run, odd!

Well.. who would have thought the weather would have turned to what it was on Sunday!

    1. i hope it doesn’t rain next weekend, but it sounds like you’re prepared if it does. unfortunately, the rain here usually brings in wind off of the lake, which makes things a little more uncomfortable which is why i hate running in the rain here. it seems like you’re prepared, but if you find yourself needing anything, just let me know!

Aww thanks Brittney! Well Sunday was the exact opposite of rain! I rained on myself with all the sweat!

I’ve done that before! Thanks…and boy I do have a story about charging my devices!

Thanks, Michelle 🙂 Random, but for some reason I kept on seeing ads for Tufts 10K and thought of my Boston blogging friends! I remember you ran it in the past!

Thanks Alaina! I’m still catching up and hoping to get my recaps written this weekend!

It was definitely good to have the list, I checked off as I packed. Now if I could only fix my packing procrastination problem 😉

    1. I just recently made a race checklist after meaning to do it for quite some time…what a lifesaver! I hope the weather holds out and that you’re able to stay dry! I’ve run a couple halfs in the rain, which was tolerable, but I don’t think I would have wanted to be out in that for a full. Fingers crossed for you!

Thanks Tracy! Well, it ended up the opposite of rain – “hot” at 70F! Of course I was wishing for a sprinkle during the entire race 🙂

Ahhh Jennifer you will love Chicago! Thank you for the words of encouragement!
