Friday Five – Fitness Lately

March 4, 2016

Happy Fri-Yay!! Double cheers as I return from my unplanned hiatus – in that time I renewed my PMP certification, worked worked worked, and visited New York and Florida.  I have loads to share and they are queued for next week 🙂 Thanks to everyone who reached out to make sure I was okay, in hindsight I should have written a quick catch up post last month.  Today I am linking up with Mar, Courtney, and Cynthia and sharing my Fitness Lately (missed this linkup…it has been months).

1. Running and Running

I have kept up with my running workouts and will run my first race of the year this Sunday…SAY WHAT?!  I will be running Pacers’ St. Pats 5K and 10K Double. I will be using it as a training run/fitness test and next week I will be in Jacksonville for the Gate River Run 15K.  It will be nice to run the course without sleet (last year’s recap).

image
I was suppose to run two DCRR races (free for members) in January and February, but I overslept for the New Years 5K and arrived too early for the Langley 8K… oops!

2. Back on ClassPass

I rejoined ClassPass once I learned Barre3 was opening a studio in my neighborhood (I dropped my YMCA membership).  I’m excited to alternate those classes with CorePower Yoga.   I was also happy to see Mint and Gold’s Gym offered “Gym Time” on ClassPass – I could use one of their treadmills in case of inclement or scorching weather.

3. Cycling

I’ve been going to cycling classes the past couple of months – including a free SoulCycle class (my second) with my friend Caitlin and Flywheel classes with my friend Emily.  Team SoulCycle vs. Team FlyWheel? I would have to say the latter – I like their workouts better and their use of a Torq board.  Power + Distance PRs this past weekend!

4. Gear and Gadgets

Finish Line had a HUGE sale on the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 15 – each pair were less than $60!  I’ll be wearing one of these shoes for Berlin.  Which color do you like?

Christmas brought some Amazon credit, so the Forerunner 235 became mine last weekend! What a beauty.  I’ve been pretty bad with my watch shots, so you’ll see many more in the future.  Bluetooth syncing + wrist heart rate monitor….yes please.

5. Fitbit Challenge

Inspired by my friend Rach,  I would like to hit at least 10,000 steps everyday for the month of March.  There were a couple of months in which I missed my step goal twice, so this would be a nice challenge for myself.  I also purchased an extra charger because there were days when my battery died at work.  My daytime steps weren’t counted – nooo!

Do you stock up on shoes when there is a good deal?

What watch do you use?

    1. Yay! Glad you’re back. I’ve fallen in love with Core Power. I haven’t tried Flywheel, but I don’t like SoulCycle that much so I’m guessing I’d like the FlyWheel style more.

Glad are loving CPY. I think you would like FlyWheel better than Soul Cycle. I still haven’t tried Revole, it is on ClassPass so I should go one day. Then I can have a better comparison amongst the three (I still like Ride DC the best, sad they closed).

    1. So glad you are back to posting Jenny. I have not done any of those classes you mentioned, but I did start working with a personal trainer about a month or so ago. Hope you enjoy your sleet free race this weekend. I’ve never been interested in the Fitbit, but I get a laugh out of my friends who are in competition with others for the most steps per day!

Hope you are enjoying your time with the personal trainer. Haha I am probably like your friends when I participate in a competition for a week 🙂

    1. So glad to see you back! That’s cool, I didn’t realize Pacers had moved to a 5K/10K format. I always loved that event. And of course I think it is awesome that you are headed to the cycling classes 🙂 I love all those Brooks shoes. Without knowing the outfit you have planned the pair in the middle shouts out to me!

Yup and it goes around the tidal basin! It is a nice change in scenery as their other 5/8Ks go through a similar route by the Capitol. Thanks for your vote 😉

    1. Woohoo! Glad to see you back! I never signed up for the St. Pats race bc I didn’t know my training schedule but I have 8 on tap. I should reconsider the 10k! I was away from home yesterday and kept synching my Fitbit and it wouldn’t. Was so mad when I got home later to realize I wasn’t wearing it – d’oh! I hated to only log 500 steps yesterday. Haha. Love the shoes! I definitely stock up when my fav pair is on sale.

You should 🙂 Haha I did something similar. I was getting mad at my app…apparently my battery was out…for two days!

Glad the trainer has been working for you. Sadly I have been neglecting mine, I really should just hop on when i’m doing “nothing” or watching TV.

If I ever see a deal for Launch, will let you know. Now I am looking to sell my Garmin 15 🙂

      1. Run Jenny Run

Haha I LOVE long run days 🙂 Hmmm…that means I should get about 30K this Sunday yay!

    1. I’m going to be at the St. Pat’s race this weekend too! I’m just doing the 10k but will look for you there 🙂 It looks like the weather will be much better this year than it was last year so that’s already a plus. I hate when my fitbit runs out of batteries and I miss my steps for the day. An extra charger is a great idea that I may need to look into.

Thanks! I’ll be at ARRC this weekend, only four miles on my schedule for Saturday. So I’ll start with ya’ll and depart once we head to the zoo (since I’m nearly home there).

    1. Yay Jenny – glad your back posting! Love the look of your new Garmin – I so want an upgrade, but can’t decide which one to go with. What a great deal you got on the shoes – I would definitely stock up too if Kinvaras ever go on sale like that! Have a great weekend!

Thanks Michelle! Glad to be back. Its a change going from the 15 to the 235 – I like the wireless sync 🙂 The Fenix is absolutely beautiful, but could not justify the price (even with the credit) hehe

    1. Glad to see you back! Sounds like you’ve been busy. I tend to buy shoes when they’re on sale and still have some I haven’t wore yet since I keep finding good deals. 😛 Good luck on your race!

I hear ya.. I need to be careful b/c I found some old old models I never wore at my parents house that I was hoarding haha 🙂 I use those for hiking and other non-running activities.

      1. Run Jenny Run

I am liking it so far. Oh no, hope that doesn’t happen to mine. Although since I don’t use it as a tracker (b/c I have my FB), I don’t keep it on all day. Just workouts + running. Thanks Sharon!

    1. Holy Cow!!! That’s a great deal on those Brooks Adrenalines. Those are my favorite running shoes. Wonder if I can still snag a pair at that price….
      Have a great weekend.

Thanks Kathryn, glad to be back. Needed more creativity in my life. I’m glad I’ll see you at the Foodie 5K 🙂

    1. Glad you to see you’re back! Hooray for keeping up with running and the race this weekend, along with 3 new pairs of shoes. I don’t blame you to stock up because sometimes they change things in new editions so if I find a shoe I like, I buy a few pairs just to be safe. Hope you have a great race tomorrow and it’s good to see your blog appear in my Feedly again!

    1. Welcome back!!

I’m curious how you like the watch because I’m so jealous! I have the 620 and love it but I am always eyeballing the newer ones. 😀

      Good luck at your race.

I love it so far! Was a major “upgrade” for me going from the 15 to the 235 – bluetooth syncing has been great and the wrist hrm. So far it seems pretty accurate.

Aww thanks, Karen! Haha love that you got three of the raspberry GTS 🙂

Thanks Alaina! Been fun catching up on your posts too.

    1. Yay, welcome back! Missed you!! I like all your shoes, but I’m partial to the 2nd and 3rd pairs (love those color pops!). I need to try Core Power Yoga still! Have a great time at your races this weekend!

      1. Run Jenny Run

Thanks! Let me know when you want to go! There are a couple of studios in VA as well, or if you come to DC can probably figure out something with Mar.

    1. hooray! you’re back. i was wondering where you were, but figured you were caught up with a busy work schedule. my days have been spent on the bike trainer this winter, but running is about to become the focus again as i train for my spring half and then go right in to marathon training!
