And just like that the Gate River Run 15K came and went. Good news or bad news first? Good news, I finished and had a great time visiting my friends in Jacksonville. Bad news, I came down with a cough on Friday and it made it difficult to run (breath) on Saturday. I’ll detail more in my recap. I’ve been battling the cough this week (which has kept me up during the nights), hence the later than usual post. I am joining Holly from HoHo Runs and Tricia from MissSippiPiddlin for this week’s Weekly Wrap.

Monday 3/7 – 5 miles | 12:31 min/mile + 10 x 100 meter strides
Ran my usual route post work – 12:31 min/mile (12:43, 12:20, 12:35, 12:23, 12:38). It was one of those workouts in which the legs never felt warmed up for the entire run. The 10 x 100 strides were tough, but slowly (well felt “fast”) finished them.
Tuesday 3/8- 60 minutes barre
A new Barre3 studio opened in my neighborhood and I signed up for a free class during their opening week. It was so nice to see the sunrise during the 6:00AM class. We did ALOT of squats during warm-up, but no problemo, right? Wait until tomorrow……
After work I met Cliff for dinner at Tortilla Coast. There are much better Tex/Mex restaurants in the area, but this location has a huge patio + not always crowded…perfect for a nice day.
Wednesday 3/9 – Rest day
This was an unplanned rest day. Holy moly my inner thighs were on fire (see Tuesday morning). Those squats got the best of me. I wasn’t even this sore post marathon. That is what I get for slacking on the strength the past couple of months. Missed my 5 mile recovery day.
Thursday 3/10 – Rest day
My thighs were still hurting, even when I walked. I would stretch in my cube (thank goodness for high walls), but they were still tight. I emailed Mollie it I should run or give it a rest. She suggested I go ahead and try. Okay – I would plan on running Friday morning. That evening I met my friend Emily to drop off her Rock ‘n’ Roll 5K bib/swag. We also had some ramen at Sakuramen, yum!
Friday 3/11 -1 mile | 12:53 min/mile
Well run I tried and it did not go well – the thighs were so sore. Flight from DC to JAX.
Saturday 3/12 – .7 miles warm up + Gate River Run 15K | 14:59 min/mile
I have to charge my Garmin to get my splits, but as you can see the run did not go as planned. I was thinking I would finish with an average 12:00 min/mile based on my training runs. My finish time of 2:19 was definitely far from my 10 Miler PR (1:51 from 2014 Cherry Blossom 10 Miler). Le sigh. Things happen. Will share more soon in my recap (chest cough + heat = no bueno). Here is a pic right after Mile 1 – crossing the first bridge.
Start/finish at Everbank Field – home of the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Sunday 3/13 – Rest
Rest day + flew back home to DC. I stepped off the plane and guess what happened? I twisted my right ankle. I heard a noise, but luckily I was able to put weight on it. So far no swelling, just some tenderness. What a weekend, right? Cliff met me at the airport – was so nice to see him!
Weekly Total: 16 miles | 3 Runs (ish)

March 16, 2016Ack! Sorry about the race. I just ran a 15k this past weekend and it didn’t go well for me at all, but it was fun and we got green champagne at the end! LOL. Onward and upward!

March 21, 2016Thanks, Wendy! Sorry you didn’t have a good race either, but green champagne sounds like a fun way to end the race π

March 16, 2016So sorry that you got sick right before the race. I know how much you were looking forward to it! Good thing that you have plenty of other races that you’ll be running this year.

March 16, 2016Ouch – i’m sorry you got sick (and then injured post-race)! It’s never fun for a race to be sick. I’ve definitely found that getting into a strength routine has helped me to feel stronger and faster for my running. Time to keep up that barre class is NOW! Hope your cold is getting better!

March 21, 2016Thanks Lauren. Took a week, but feeling better. You are right about strength, when I was feeling my all time “best” I was consistently strength training 2-3x week. Hope you are feeling better this week as well.

March 16, 2016Pure Barre sounds like Pure Torture. LOL. Good job for finishing a tough race when you were not feeling well. You have a beautiful medal to show for it. That is one distance I have never tried. We have a local one that includes a hill nicknamed “The Beast”. I think that’s what has kept me away. I hope your ankle doesn’t give you any problems. Thanks for linking with us Jenny.

March 21, 2016Haha – sometimes it feels like torture π Oh boy… a race with a hill named “The Beast” does not sound easy! Luckily my ankle has been feeling okay – will be back running this week.
Ali @ Hit the Ground Running
March 16, 2016I’m sorry you had a cough, but the race looks fun and any chance to run with friends is worth it! I love the medal!

March 17, 2016The one thing I’m concerned about traveling for a race is the airplane environment. I’ve picked up more coughs than I’d like after flying. I will drink Airborne as a precaution before heading to the airport. I hope your cough gets better and you can breathe again on your runs.

March 17, 2016Sorry to hear the race didn’t go as planned and what a scare with your ankle! I’m glad it seems like it is okay and hopefully – fingers crossed – not a serious injury.
Run Jenny Run
March 23, 2016Thanks Sun. Luckily it was not a serious injury. It was tender for the first few days and fine on Day 3. I was out sick for the week so it reaped the benefits of no running as well (just in case).
Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy
March 17, 2016I’m so sorry. Yes, I’ve had that happen to me — that was my ZOOMA Annapolis experience last year — hot, not time to acclimate, and I was sick for just that weekend.
Bad runs & races happen, but they just make us stronger in the end!

March 18, 2016Ah sorry to hear about getting sick! I had bronchitis before the Stampede 10K and I hope that’s not what you are getting. The pic crossing the bridge is nice! Way to stick it out and finish! The medal is nice as well! Hope you feel better soon. I also hope your ankle is ok!
