Friday Five: Lessons from MCM ’07 Training

June 13, 2014

June 13, 2014

Another Friday is here and we are almost midway through June… what??!?!?? Summer is going to F-L-Y.  This past Wednesday I attended Potomac River Running’s Distance Training Program kickoff at their new Penn Quarter location (more about that in an upcoming post).

The kickoff meeting brought back memories of training for my first 26.2, the Marine Corp Marathon.  Although it has been 7 years, I thought it would be a good exercise to write about five lessons learned from MCM ‘07 training as I prepare for #2.

1. Going to Sleep Early / Waking up Early

Distance training in DC = waking up early to beat the heat (even earlier when the mileage increases).  There will be some social sacrifices this summer.

2. Hydration Hydration Hydration

Hot + Humid = DC! Which means I will be running with my fuel belt (groan).  Although I prefer water, I know I need electrolytes for my 4-5 hour runs.  After trying the Strawberry Lemondade flavor at the GW Parkway Classic, Nuun will be my choice of hydration.

3. Fueling Up

Before + During + After training run fuel.  I will have loads of english muffins, peanut butter, cliff blocks, and chocolate coconut water in my kitchen/car (I used to keep a small cooler with water and PB&J sandwiches for post long runs).  I plan to use my Runner’s World Cookbook for additional fueling ideas.

4. Body Glide

While I do not typically have chaffing issues, summer running conditions will change that. That means bring on the Body Glide.

5. Running without Music

I ran without music during my long runs and I will be doing the same this time around. I will miss the music, but I understand the importance of it (safety, getting to know my group, and getting to know my body).

Even though this will be my second marathon – it has been so long it feels like my first!

Any marathon training tips/lessons learned?

Are you training for a fall race?

Today I am linking up with MarCourtney, and Cynthia. Happy Wedding Weekend to Courtney!
