Another training week complete! At the beginning of each week I say to myself, “I will hit all my scheduled runs”…..but of course I haven’t had that perfect training week…yet (one day I will + it should be more manageable now that the Quantico Tri is over…recap coming soon).
Monday 8/24– 2 mile walk
Tuesday 8/25 – 2 mile walk
Wednesday 8/26 – 2 mile walk
Thursday 8/27 – 2 mile walk
Friday 8/28 – 2 mile walk
Saturday 8/29– 16 mile run @12:00 min/mile (average)
Sunday 8/30 – Baltimore 6 Miler @12:02 min/mile
Total: 32 miles (10 walk | 22 run)
The week started off with a sore throat, after two painful days it went away. Score! Not so fast….by Thursday I was coughing all day/night. It wasn’t any cough… it was what I like to call the”Walrus Cough” the one that hurts the ribs and gives you a headache. I missed my weekday runs, but did not want to miss my long run (I decided to run 16 vs 18).
Run
Run #1: 16 miles @12:00min/mile (average)
Because the heat/humidity returned to DC + my cough I decided it would be better for me to run inside (easier to breath). I warmed up, ran 8 miles, took a break and then ran another 8 miles. Nothing to exciting.
Run #2: 6 miles @12:02min/mile (11:21, 11:36, 11:44, 12:19, 12:50, 12:30)
The next day I headed north for the inaugural Baltimore 6 Miler. My goal was to run the race at marathon pace (12:00 min/mile). I met my goal average wise, but would have preferred more consistent splits.
There were a few factors that led to the not so pretty second half which I will detail in my recap (spoiler alert: water stop ran out of cups + this girl made did not bring her water bottle). Despite the heat, it was a nice change in scenery (running along the water…yes please). PS – I am glad I ran inside on Saturday… it was tough running with a cough in this weather.
Fun
Following Saturday’s long run I headed over to City Tap House for a Oiselle brunch.
It was fun meeting new teammates, hearing what everyone is training for, and catching up with everyone.
Of course I cannot end this post without a food pic! After Sunday’s race, my friend Rafael took me to Alma Cocina Latina, a fairly new Venezuelan restaurant in Canton. I had the La Nacional arepa – shredded beef, ripe plantains, slow cooked black beans, and fresh cilantro…SOO GOOD. I definitely want to try Arepa Zone next time I visit Union Market in NoMa.
How was your weekend?
Have you eaten Venezuelan food before?
Kelli
September 1, 2015I have not tried Venezualan food before. Peruvian, Colombian, Brazilian, Argentinian – yes. Sounds like you’re back into the racing scene! Hope you have a great week!

Chaitali
September 2, 2015Ugh… sorry about the cough 🙁 It seems like a lot of people are struggling with sinus-y types things right now. But way to go on that long run and the race. Though running out at the water stop is not a good sign.

September 2, 2015Sorry to hear you had a sore throat and cough. It’s a wise thing you gave your body a chance to rest. You had a good strong 16 mile and 6 mile runs! If you ever want to link your weekly recaps, please don’t forget about the Weekly Wrap. We’d love for you to join us. I don’t think I’ve had Venezuelan food. It looks delicious.
