Friday Five – I Signed Up for a Triathlon

February 27, 2015

Friday is here! Looking forward to a weekend of running (St. Pat’s Double), yoga, relaxing, catching up on blogs and comments, and House of Cards Season 3.  Today I am linking up with Mar, Courtney, and Cynthia and as the title suggests, I signed up for a triathlon!

1. The Distance

Hosted at the Marine Corps Base Quantico this third year event is a sprint triathlon consisting of:

  • 750 meter open water swim
  • 10 mile bike
  • 5K run

2. The Swim

I was a swimmer growing up, so fortunately this portion of the tri does not intimidate me… I just need to get back into the pool (which is why I’ve incorporated swimming into my monthly goals, but no success so far).

3. The Bike

I think this will be the weakest leg for me.  While I do attend cycling classes I have not been on my road bike in a couple of years.  It is sitting in my room with flat tires…oops!

4. The Run

5K…no problem, but then again….I may feel differently after a few brick workouts this spring/summer.

5. The Training

The Quantico Tri will be held in August, which means it will overlap with marathon training.  Given the distance, I think I should be okay with training as long as I bike and swim on cross training days.

I’ve been tracking this event for a couple of years (since it started), so I am really looking forward to documenting it here on (Swim, Bike) Run Jenny (Swim, Bike) Run.

Anyone else signing up for the Quantico Tri or another?

Is a triathlon on your bucket list?

Thanks Coco! Interestingly, when I attended a tri class a few years ago they said if you were a strong swimmer, it helped, but it was the bike/run legs where you have more “time to work with/improve” in terms of racing/personal bests.

Thanks Jenn! Yikes…. I did not like the opening scene in Jaws (with the water). I still turn away in certain parts.

Very cool! So jealous that FL and CA have so many tri options 🙂

Thanks Stacey! I ‘ll need to re-read some of your older posts.

    1. Jenny, this is super exciting news! I know you’re going to do great! Well, that flat tire is a little worrisome – ha! 😉 My husband completed his first sprint-tri last year and now he’s training for some other ones coming up in early -late summer; it’s been exciting to watch! I’m not sure I’ll be doing a tri anytime soon, but maybe one day… Thanks so much for sharing your great news and I’m DYING to start watching House of Cards – GAH!!! Have a great weekend!

Thanks Tara! Oh I think I recall you writing about J’s sprint. I am sure you are the best supporter 🙂 Ahhhh can’t wait to read about your marathon!!

Thanks Kathryn. That seems to be the consensus; good news for stronger bikers/runners it is those legs where they can make the most gains (since the swim is typically shorter).

    1. Wow, that’s awesome!! I’m excited for you! Looking forward to reading how the training goes. You totally got this!! A triathlon is not on my bucket list, by the way. 🙂 But I do want to start biking more. Will need to get a bike first…

That is good to know. I’ll have to put it down in my notebook.

    1. how exciting! i definitely want to do a triathlon someday, but like you feel nervous about the bike. i don’t even own a bike anymore, actually! i’m hoping to get one for christmas so i can do some sprint distances next year. looking forward to following along with your training!

Thanks Jill! I could see why swimming is (informally) voted as the hardest leg; I would only swim in lake/river/pool tris, I don’t think I could do ocean swimming.

      1. Run Jenny Run

Excellent, very excited for you! Yes, I would agree we should swim together. Knowing a friend is going will make me go 🙂 Which pool would you go to? Is there a new one by Cap Hill?

    1. Awesome! I can’t wait to hear about your triathlon training experiences. I’m not sure I will ever do a tri since I don’t know how to swim (though I’m planning to take lessons soon), but it sounds like an great blend of endurance sports!

Thanks Jess! Way to go on taking lessons. In addition to running, so jealous of the number of tris that you will have in Cali.

    1. Jenny- Your blog looks awesome! Love it. I am on the LUNA Chix Tri team, come out and bike with us, come April we will do monthly rides out of Tri360. Great group of ladies and there is a TON of triathlon knowledge to be had. Great goal!

Thanks! Beach cruisers are cute 🙂 At the sprint tri I participated a few years ago, I saw a few people use the DC Bike Share Rentals, which are rather large and heavy haha. Yayyy for commenting!

    1. Way to go on signing up for a triathlon!! That’s great that you were a swimmer growing up as that is my major weakness. I hope to do a tri some day but I really need to work on swimming. I’m not even sure I can go a whole length of the pool! I do hope to work on swimming more this summer!

Thanks Sharon. I think you can definitely do it, you seem like an all around amazing athlete. I am sure you will pick up swimming right away.

    1. I’m so excited for you!!! Being comfortable with the swim is a huge advantage, as that’s the part that usually freaks people out the most. The bike is my weakest leg too…from experience, you’ll probably get passed a lot by people on fancy bikes but as long as you’re not in it to win it, you’ll be okay 😉 You definitely got it on the run, but brick workouts are key! Your legs will feel like straight up jello the first few times but you’ll get used to it. With all the running and cross training you’ll be doing for marathon training, I think you’ll find that you’ll be more than prepared for a sprint. They’re the most fun distance anyway! I can’t wait to hear more about your training!

Thanks for the advice Tracy! Haha I am definitely not in it to win it 🙂 Will be fun to use this to mix up the week a bit.

      1. Run Jenny Run

Thank you! That must have been very traumatizing to go over the front handlebars. Looking forward to mixing up my cross training.

      1. Run Jenny Run

Looking forward to it – will be a nice change in terms of cross training during the summer. Biking will probably be my weakest link

      1. Run Jenny Run

Thanks Molly – would be a good way to cross train if I get it right. I really want to get back into the water.

    1. I’m training for my 123rd tri (Olympic distance) that will be in May. But I have been “doing” tris since 1982, so I’ve had a lot of time to practice….haha. I love swimming….especially the swim from Alcatraz to San Fran!

      1. Run Jenny Run

Cheryl that is an amazing accomplishment, congratulations on #123. Wow, would love to read more about the Alcatraz swim, I heard its cold!

    1. That’s amazing. You are going to do great!

The idea of a trip appeals to me, but I don’t think it’s every going to happen. I’m terrified of open water swimming in the ocean (which is how tris usually are in my neck of the woods) and I’m not a great cyclist.

Can’t wait to read about your training and race!

Eeeks… I don’t think I would do a tri if the swim portion is in the ocean. I think I am fine with (calm) rivers, lakes and pools. I am not a fan of salt or jelly fish 🙂 Thanks for stopping by!

      1. Run Jenny Run

Yes!! Can’t wait to “virtually train” together 🙂
